Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show nears, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
