The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
